India sits in the middle of the tipping spectrum. Small tips — often called baksheesh — are woven into everyday service, and anyone who carries your bags, drives you around, or guides you through a monument will appreciate one. At the same time, there’s no fixed percentage culture like in the US, and the amounts are modest.

The trickiest part is the restaurant bill, where you may find a “service charge” that looks mandatory but isn’t. Here’s how it works, plus what to tip drivers and guides on a typical tour of Delhi, Agra, and Rajasthan.

Restaurants and the Service Charge

At sit-down restaurants, about 10% is the standard tip when no service charge has been added. At upscale places in big cities, some diners leave a bit more. Street food stalls, dhabas (roadside eateries), and casual canteens don’t expect a tip.

Many restaurants add a service charge, often 5–10%, below the food total. Indian consumer authorities have said this charge should not be compulsory, and diners can ask for it to be removed. In practice, if you were happy with the service, paying it is the simplest choice — just don’t tip on top of it. If you’d rather tip your server directly in cash, ask for it to be taken off. Rules on this have been challenged and revisited in recent years, so treat it as voluntary rather than relying on any specific regulation.

Don’t confuse the service charge with GST, the goods and services tax, which is a separate line on the bill and is not optional.

Drivers

Many visitors hire a car and driver for the classic Golden Triangle or a Rajasthan loop. The daily rate covers the car, fuel, and driver, and drivers usually expect a tip of INR 300–500 per day, given as a lump sum at the end of the trip. Be more generous if the driver was safe, patient, and helpful well beyond the driving.

Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers on agreed or metered fares don’t expect a tip; rounding up is fine. Uber and Ola work as they do at home — optional tip in the app. See our rideshare tipping guide for US comparisons.

Tour Guides

Licensed guides at sites like the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, or Varanasi’s ghats generally hope for a tip on top of their fee: INR 300–500 for a half day and INR 500–1,000 for a full day are common ranges for a small group. Be wary of guides who steer you toward shops; a guide who does that isn’t owed a bigger tip. More guidance in our tour guide tipping guide.

Hotels and Everyday Situations

  • Hotel porters: INR 50–100 per bag.
  • Housekeeping: INR 100–200 per day, left at the end of the stay.
  • Shoe minders at temples: INR 10–20.
  • Restroom attendants: INR 10–20.
  • Spa and salon: around 10% at upscale spas; small amounts at local salons.

Luxury hotels may include a service charge in room and restaurant bills, but porters and housekeepers still commonly receive tips.

Cash and Small Notes

Almost all tips in India are paid in cash. Digital payments are everywhere for locals, but they often aren’t an easy option for visitors, so keep a supply of INR 10, 20, 50, and 100 notes. Large INR 500 notes are hard to break for small tips. Roughly INR 85–90 equals $1 — check the current rate with our USD to INR converter.

Tipping in India: FAQ

Do you tip in India?

Yes, modest tips are customary. Leave about 10% at sit-down restaurants without a service charge, and tip drivers, guides, and hotel porters.

Is the service charge mandatory in Indian restaurants?

It’s meant to be voluntary, and you can ask the restaurant to remove it. If you pay it, there’s no need to tip on top.

How much should I tip a driver in India?

About INR 300–500 per day for a hired car and driver, usually given as one lump sum at the end of the trip.

How much do you tip a tour guide in India?

Around INR 300–500 for a half-day tour and INR 500–1,000 for a full day, on top of the guide’s fee.

Should I tip in rupees or dollars in India?

Tip in rupees. Small US bills are hard for workers to exchange and lose value to fees, while INR 50 and 100 notes are easy to use.
