Belize is an English-speaking country with a tourism-driven economy, and its tipping customs will feel familiar to most Americans — just a little more relaxed. Tips aren’t mandatory, but servers, guides, and boat crews in places like Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, and San Ignacio appreciate them and often depend on them.

The Belize dollar (BZD, written BZ$) is pegged to the US dollar at exactly 2 to 1, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. That makes tipping simple — but it also makes it easy to mix up which dollars a price is in.

Restaurants and Bars

Leave 10–15% at sit-down restaurants, toward 15% at tourist-oriented places and for attentive service. At a casual local spot serving rice and beans, stew chicken, or fry jacks, rounding up or leaving a few Belize dollars is fine.

Check the bottom of the bill first. Many resort restaurants and some places in San Pedro add a service charge, often 10–15%, in addition to the 12.5% GST (general sales tax). If a service charge is listed, an extra tip is optional. At beach bars, BZ$2 (US$1) per drink or 10–15% of a tab is standard.

Some businesses add a surcharge of a few percent for credit card payments, and small operators often prefer cash. If you plan to tip on a card, ask first whether the terminal has a tip option.

BZ$ or US$? Avoiding the Currency Mix-Up

Because both currencies circulate, menus and tour prices may be quoted in either. A “$20” lunch could be BZ$20 (US$10) or US$20. If it isn’t clear, ask — and make sure you base your tip on the right figure. To convert in your head, halve the Belize dollar amount to get US dollars.

Tipping in US dollars is completely normal. If you pay in US dollars you’ll usually get change in Belize dollars, so keep that change for tips around town. Small US bills (US$1s and US$5s) are handy; US coins are generally not accepted.

Tour Guides, Divemasters, and Fishing Guides

Guided trips are the heart of a Belize vacation — snorkeling Hol Chan, diving the Blue Hole, cave tubing, or exploring Maya sites and the ATM cave. Typical tips:

  • Full-day group tour or snorkel trip: US$10–20 (BZ$20–40) per person.
  • Half-day tour: around US$5–10 per person.
  • Dive trips: around US$10–20 per diver per day for the divemaster and boat crew, often pooled.
  • Fishing guides (fly fishing for bonefish, permit, and tarpon): 10–20% of the trip price — see our fishing charter tipping guide.

If a boat captain and a guide both worked your trip, hand the tip to the guide and ask that it be shared, or tip each one directly. Our tour guide tipping guide has more on splitting tips between crew.

Hotels and Resorts

Leave US$2–5 per night for housekeeping, more at upscale resorts, and US$1–2 per bag for porters. Many resorts add a service charge to the room bill — check your booking — and some keep a staff tip box at the front desk for a pooled end-of-stay tip that reaches kitchen and grounds staff too.

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive property, see our all-inclusive resort tipping guide for how much cash to set aside for bartenders, servers, and housekeeping.

Taxis and Water Taxis

Taxis in Belize don’t use meters, so agree on the fare — and the currency — before you get in. A tip isn’t expected; round up, or add a few dollars if the driver helps with luggage or waits for you at a stop. Water taxi crews running between Belize City and the cayes aren’t usually tipped.

Tipping in Belize: FAQ

Do you tip in Belize?

Yes, tipping is customary in tourist areas. Leave 10–15% at restaurants unless a service charge is included, and tip guides, dive crews, and housekeeping staff.

Can I tip in US dollars in Belize?

Yes. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere at a fixed rate of US$1 = BZ$2. Use bills rather than coins.

How much do you tip a tour guide in Belize?

About US$10–20 per person for a full-day group tour or snorkel trip, and around US$5–10 for a half-day outing. Private fishing guides usually get 10–20% of the trip price.

Is a service charge included in Belize restaurants?

Sometimes. Resort restaurants and some tourist spots add one, often 10–15%. If it’s on the bill, extra tipping is optional.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Belize?

Not usually. Agree on the fare in advance, then round up or add a little for help with bags.
