Hibachi restaurants split the job of serving you between two people: a chef who cooks and performs at the grill in front of you, and a server who takes drink and food orders, brings soup and salad, and handles the check. That leaves many diners wondering whether they owe two tips.
In most cases you don’t. Here’s how hibachi tipping works, who ends up with the money, and how to handle the big birthday dinners these restaurants are famous for.
Tip 18–20% on the Whole Bill
Treat hibachi like any full-service restaurant: tip 18–20% of the entire bill, including drinks, before tax. For a family of four with a $180 bill, that’s $32–36. For a group of eight spending $400, it’s $72–80. The 20% calculator gives you the exact amount.
Don’t try to tip separately on the “chef’s food” and the “server’s drinks.” The tip line on your receipt is meant for the whole meal.
Chef vs. Server: Who Gets the Tip?
At many hibachi restaurants, tips from the table go into a shared pool split between chefs and servers, and sometimes bussers and bartenders too. The exact split varies from restaurant to restaurant, and some pay chefs a higher hourly wage with a smaller share of tips. Our tip pooling guide explains how these arrangements usually work.
If you’re curious, it’s perfectly fine to ask your server: “Does the chef share in the tip?” Most will tell you.
Because of that pooling, cutting the whole tip to punish one person rarely lands where you intend. If the chef was excellent but the server vanished for half the meal, leave around 15–18% on the bill and hand the chef a few dollars directly — and mention the service problem to a manager.
Should You Tip the Hibachi Chef Separately?
It’s optional. If the chef put on a great show — onion volcano, shrimp tossed into mouths, extra attention to the kids — handing them $5–10 in cash as they finish, or $1–2 per person at the table, is a warm gesture that goes straight to them.
A cash tip to the chef is an add-on, not a substitute. Still leave 18–20% on the bill for the server and the pool.
Large Groups and Automatic Gratuity
Hibachi tables seat eight to ten, so big groups are routine. Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity of around 18–20% for parties of six or eight or more. Read the bill before you add anything: if it says “gratuity” or “service charge,” the tip is already included. More on this in auto-gratuity explained.
If your group is splitting the check, ask for separate checks when you order — many hibachi restaurants can do this, but it’s harder after the fact. Otherwise, see our guide to splitting the bill.
If you’re seated with strangers at a shared grill, you tip only on your own party’s check.
Birthday Parties and Celebrations
- Free dessert or birthday song: tip on what the bill would have been, including any comped dessert or drink.
- Big, loud, or long celebrations: lean toward 20% or a bit higher, especially if the table lingers through a seating the restaurant could have filled.
- Kids’ parties: extra napkins, spilled rice, and constant refills justify the top of the range.
- Chef took photos or did extra tricks for the birthday guest: a few dollars in cash to the chef is a nice thank-you.
For hibachi takeout, no one is performing or serving at a table, so tipping is optional — about 10% for a large order is generous.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do you tip at hibachi?
Tip 18–20% of the whole bill, just like any sit-down restaurant. That tip usually covers both the chef and the server.
Do you tip the hibachi chef separately?
It is not required, since chefs commonly share in the tip pool. Handing a great chef $5–10 in cash is an optional extra.
Do hibachi chefs get part of the tip?
At many restaurants, yes — tips are pooled and split between chefs and servers. The exact split varies, so ask your server if you want to know.
Is 15% a good tip at hibachi?
15% is on the low side for a full-service hibachi dinner in 2026. It is acceptable for so-so service, but 18–20% is the norm.
Do hibachi restaurants add gratuity for large groups?
Many do, often around 18–20% for parties of six or eight or more. Check the bill for a gratuity or service charge line before tipping.
