Cruise gratuities are different from every other form of tipping. Instead of deciding how much to tip after each meal or service, cruise lines charge a daily auto-gratuity per person that is added to your onboard account. Most passengers never see it line-by-line — it simply appears on the final bill.

In early 2026, five major cruise lines raised their daily gratuity rates. Understanding what you are paying, who receives it, and when it makes sense to add more is valuable for anyone planning a cruise.

What the Auto-Gratuity Covers

The daily auto-gratuity is pooled and distributed among the crew members who most directly serve passengers: cabin stewards (housekeeping), dining room servers, assistant servers, and head waiters. The exact distribution varies by cruise line but typically follows this general allocation:

• Cabin steward: The largest single share, typically 35–40% of the pool
• Dining room server: 25–30%
• Assistant server / busser: 15–20%
• Head waiter: 5–10%

Cruise line workers generally earn very low base wages — many come from countries where $1,000–2,000/month represents a substantial income. The auto-gratuity is their primary form of meaningful compensation. Removing it (which most cruise lines technically allow) directly harms the workers who serviced your cabin and meals.

Should You Prepay Gratuities?

Most cruise lines offer the option to prepay gratuities when booking. This locks in the current rate (protecting you if rates increase before your sailing) and reduces the end-of-cruise bill shock. It does not change who receives the money or how it is distributed.

The rate-lock argument matters in 2026: five cruise lines raised rates in the first four months of the year. If you book 12 months out at a lower rate and prepay, you save the difference. At Norwegian's $20/person/day, a 7-night cruise for 2 costs $280 in gratuities — if rates rise to $22 before sailing, prepaying saved you $28.

When to Tip Extra Beyond the Auto-Gratuity

The auto-gratuity covers the baseline crew. For exceptional individual service, extra cash tips are appreciated — and are kept entirely by the individual, not pooled.

Can You Remove the Auto-Gratuity?

Most cruise lines allow passengers to reduce or remove the auto-gratuity at guest services before disembarkation. This is technically permitted but strongly discouraged by crew advocacy groups and former cruise workers. Removing the gratuity directly reduces the income of cabin stewards and dining staff who served you for the entire voyage.

Some passengers remove auto-gratuities planning to tip individual crew members in cash. This approach has a major flaw: you cannot tip every crew member who contributed to your experience, and the cash tips typically total less than the auto-gratuity would have been. The pooling system exists precisely to distribute gratuities fairly across the service team, not just the visible individuals.

Bar and Beverage Packages

If you purchase a beverage package, gratuity is typically included in the package price (usually 18–20% added at checkout). Individual drinks ordered outside the package — specialty cocktails, wine at dinner, bar tabs — should be tipped separately at 18–20%.

Check your package terms carefully. Some cruise lines include gratuity on packages; others add it at purchase. Do not double-tip on package drinks that already include gratuity.

Luxury and Ultra-Luxury Lines

Lines like Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, and Crystal operate on a tips-included model. Gratuities are folded into the cruise fare, which is significantly higher to compensate.
