You do not need an app to tip well — three simple tricks cover almost every situation. The whole system is built on one move: finding 10% of the bill. Everything else is adding, halving, or doubling from there. Learn this once and you will never freeze at the check again.

Step 1: Find 10% (Move the Decimal)

To get 10% of any bill, slide the decimal point one place to the left. $48.00 becomes $4.80. $112.00 becomes $11.20. That is it — 10% is the anchor for every other tip rate.

The Three Core Tricks

You WantDo This
20% tipFind 10%, then double it
15% tipFind 10%, then add half of it
18% tipAverage of 15% and 20%, or 20% minus a little
25% tipFind 10%, double it, add half of 10%
10% tipJust move the decimal left

Worked Example: $45 Bill

  • 10% → move the decimal: $4.50
  • 20% → double $4.50: $9.00
  • 15% → $4.50 + half ($2.25): $6.75
  • 25% → $9.00 + $2.25: $11.25

The Round-First Shortcut

Real bills are messy. Round the total to the nearest easy number before you start. A $43.80 check becomes $44 (or even $45) in your head — find 10% of that, double it, done. Tipping is not an exam; a tip that is a few cents "off" from rounding is completely normal and usually lands in the server's favor.

Splitting Between People

Once you have the grand total (bill + tip), divide by the number of people. The fastest way: get the total, then split. On a $90 total among 3 people, that is $30 each. For awkward numbers, round each person up to the next dollar — the small surplus covers tax rounding and nobody underpays.

When to Just Use the Calculator

Mental math is perfect for a quick solo lunch. But for a big group, an uneven split, or when you want an exact per-person number with no arguments, a calculator is faster and fairer. That is exactly what TipQuickly is built for — enter the bill, pick the percentage, set the number of people, and get the answer instantly.
